Usnovi (Anthony Ramos), a boy originally from the Dominican Republic, has his own suenito: he wants to return home one day and restore his father's cafe on the Caribbean coast... However, in the meantime, she works as a regular manicurist at a local salon. A grandmother who raised an entire neighborhood – she would like to live a different, completely different life; however, since her dream has not come true, she only wants happiness for all her adopted children, children torn from their native roots, lonely and infinitely sad in a foreign land.
Often in musical films, the conventionality of reality, in which the characters begin to sing and dance, causes discomfort (at least during the first minutes of watching). However, this does not apply to the movie "On the Heights of New York." Based on the Broadway musical of the same name, it organically combines the tragedy of the general narrative, the carnival brightness of Latin American culture and cinematic skill: dynamic, driving, this film invites the viewer to dance and does not let go of the embrace until the last frame.
And if it all starts as another romantic adventure, then through the stories of the characters we learn much more: the history of their families, peoples and cultures. In the songs of teenagers, youth and the older generation living on Brooklyn Heights, one can hear the nostalgic sadness and indescribable suffering of migrants who have left home forever and always carry it in their hearts. Thanks to the variety of characters, we look at the situation from different angles: the problems of children, schoolchildren, students, workers, pensioners, who merge into a common chorus, and everyone solemnly celebrates the flag of their state, although they have to stay in the same place: on the heights of New York.
The finale of the tape includes a twister, but for some reason this much-desired and long-suffering happy ending does not look organic. It seems that the creators of the musical – and the film – have compromised with the viewer, allowing him to live a little bit of this little "dream" about finding a house.
